Vikram S. Oberoi is the Managing Director and CEO of the Oberoi Group, one of the world’s biggest luxury hotel companies. His path to becoming the company’s CEO is one of hard work, devotion, and a strong commitment to quality.
Vikram S. Oberoi was born into a family with a long history in the hospitality business. The Oberoi Group was created in 1934 by his grandfather, Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi, and his father, Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi, took over as chairman and CEO in the 1960s.
Vikram grew raised in an environment that was heavily impacted by the values of the hotel sector, and he developed an early interest in business.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Pepperdine University in California. During his undergraduate summers, he worked in hotels, but he also had stock market expertise because he later worked as a broker at ANZ McCaughan in Australia.
In 1991, he began full-time training with the hotel chain. He has since worked in every department of the hotel, including the travel desk, reception, housekeeping, and sales. He was named General Manager of the Oberoi Rajvilas in Jaipur in 1997, and he was instrumental in building the property into one of India’s top luxury hotels.
Vikram was appointed CEO of the Oberoi Group in 2006 after being raised to the position of Joint Managing Director in 2002. The Oberoi Group has continued to extend its global footprint under his leadership, with the firm now operating luxury hotels in India, Egypt, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
When asked about his future role in the company, he responds that one does not have to be the CEO to be a leader.
I don’t consider myself to be in the hospitality business; I consider myself to be in the business of creating memories.” People arrive with some luggage and leave with the same luggage. “The only thing they take away with them are the memories they made here.
Vikram stated during the unveiling of the 5-star Oberoi in Gurgaon.
The company currently manages 32 hotels under the luxury brand Oberoi Hotels & Resorts, with a further 10 five-star properties under the Trident Hotels brand. The Clarkes Hotel in Shimla and the Maidens Hotel in Delhi are also part of the company. However, these two properties are not held under the Trident or under the Oberoi brand.
