In a strategic move to further strengthen its leadership team and expand its presence in India, electric vehicle pioneer Tesla announced on Monday the appointment of Vaibhav Taneja as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Taneja, an Indian-origin accounting expert, will also continue his role as the Chief Accounting Officer for the company.

The announcement comes as Tesla’s previous CFO, Zachary Kirkhorn, steps down after contributing significantly to the company’s growth over the past 13 years. The 45-year-old Taneja, known for his exceptional acumen with numbers, will assume the role of CFO, often referred to as the “Master of Coin” position, while also overseeing the financial trajectory of the company.

In a LinkedIn post, departing CFO Zachary Kirkhorn expressed his pride in the work accomplished during his 13-year tenure, stating, “Being a part of this company is a special experience, and I’m extremely proud of the work we’ve done together since I joined over 13 years ago.”

Taneja’s journey with Tesla began in 2017 when he transitioned from SolarCity, a dynamic solar energy firm that Tesla had acquired. Starting as the Vice President of SolarCity, Taneja’s strategic leadership eventually led him to become the Corporate Controller, playing a key role in the seamless integration of accounting teams from both firms.

Vaibhav Taneja’s educational background is rooted in commerce. He obtained his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Delhi University between 1996 and 1999. He further honed his financial expertise by pursuing Chartered Accountancy from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, completing it between 1997 and 2000.

Tesla’s visionary CEO, Elon Musk, has high hopes for Taneja’s new role, especially in light of Tesla’s growing interest in India. The appointment of Taneja as CFO signifies the company’s intention to target India as its next major supply ecosystem creator.

Taneja also holds a directorial position in Tesla’s Indian arm, Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited, reflecting his deep involvement in the company’s operations in the region.

Before joining Tesla, Taneja spent 17 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he gained invaluable experience in accounting. His extensive career spans various multinational companies in sectors such as technology, finance, retail, and telecommunications.

Vaibhav Taneja’s net worth is estimated to be around $52.1 million (approximately Rs 4,31,27,59,850). He also holds approximately 104,504 units of Tesla, Inc common stock, further solidifying his alignment with the company’s growth and success.
