Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi, affectionately known as “Biki,” the Chairman Emeritus of the Oberoi Group of hotels and resorts, breathed his last on Tuesday morning at the age of 94. The hospitality industry luminary, credited with transforming Oberoi Hotels and Resorts into a global luxury brand, left an indelible mark on the international hospitality landscape.
In 2002, PRS Oberoi assumed the role of Chairman and Director of EIH Limited, following the demise of his father and Oberoi Group’s founding chairman, Mohan Singh Oberoi. Under his leadership, the Oberoi Group expanded its footprint globally, with several flagship hotels in key cities. In May 2022, after more than two decades at the helm, he stepped down from his position as Chairman and Director, passing the baton to his nephew, Arjun Singh Oberoi.
His son, Vikram S. Oberoi, Managing Director of Oberoi Hotels, conveyed that PRS Oberoi’s decision to step down was motivated by a desire to dedicate more time to his health.
During his tenure, PRS Oberoi not only elevated the Oberoi brand internationally but also established The Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development in Delhi in 1967, emphasizing the importance of human capital in the hospitality industry. The Oberoi Group’s website highlights his belief that people are the most valuable asset of any organization.
In a joint statement, Vikram S. Oberoi and Arjun Oberoi expressed their deep sadness at the passing of the hospitality titan, describing him as a visionary leader whose dedication and pursuit of excellence elevated The Oberoi Group to international acclaim. They noted his influence extended beyond corporate success, touching the lives of countless hoteliers through mentorship and a commitment to unparalleled standards.
Recognized for his outstanding contributions to the hospitality sector, PRS Oberoi received numerous awards and honors throughout his illustrious career. In 2008, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors, for his exceptional service in tourism and hospitality. Business India magazine named him Businessman of the Year in 2008 for building a world-class hospitality brand.

The accolades continued with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, the Corporate Hotelier of the World award by HOTELS magazine in 2010, and a Lifetime Achievement Award for Management by The All India Management Association in 2013.
His legacy as the “founder father of modern luxury hospitality in India” was underscored by CNBC TV18’s inclusion of PRS Oberoi in their Top 15 Indian Business Icons in 2015. The Oberoi Group patriarch’s impact on the hospitality industry, both nationally and globally, remains an enduring testament to his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence.
