In a strategic move to address declining sales and enhance operational efficiency, Starbucks has announced the elimination of 1,100 corporate support roles worldwide, along with several hundred unfilled positions.

This decision, communicated by CEO Brian Niccol on February 24, 2025, marks the largest layoff in the company’s history.

The layoffs, affecting approximately 7% of Starbucks’ 16,000 corporate employees, are part of Niccol’s broader plan to streamline operations and reduce organizational complexity.

Notably, in-store baristas, as well as roasting, manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution staff, will not be impacted by these cuts.

In an official message, Niccol stated, “Our intent is to operate more efficiently, increase accountability, reduce complexity, and drive better integration.”

He emphasized that the company’s size and structure had led to inefficiencies, with “too many layers, managers of small teams, and roles focused primarily on coordinating work.”

Concurrently, Starbucks is undertaking a significant menu overhaul to improve service speed and customer satisfaction.

Beginning March 4, 2025, the company will discontinue 13 beverages, including nine Frappuccinos and the popular Iced Matcha Lemonade, aiming to reduce menu complexity by 30% by the end of the fiscal year.

Despite these reductions, Starbucks plans to introduce new offerings, such as Lavender beverages, Iced Cherry Chai, and the Jalapeño Chicken Pocket, reflecting a focus on innovation while maintaining popular items.

The restructuring comes in response to a 2% decline in global same-store sales during the 2024 fiscal year, attributed to customer dissatisfaction with price increases and wait times in the U.S., and intensified competition in China.

Niccol, who assumed the role of CEO in September 2024, is committed to revitalizing Starbucks by enhancing the in-store experience and operational efficiency.

The company is also providing support to affected employees through severance packages, healthcare coverage, and career transition services.
