OpenAI has introduced an upgraded version of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, integrating search engine capabilities that could reshape how users access information online.

This latest release, powered by the advanced GPT-4 model, builds on the original SearchGPT prototype, allowing ChatGPT users to retrieve real-time information directly within the chat interface.

In a recent announcement on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman encouraged users to explore the enhanced ChatGPT Plus, which now includes a Chrome extension for faster performance and improved results. Altman highlighted that the upgraded ChatGPT enables users to receive quick, relevant answers without needing to switch to a separate search engine, potentially challenging Google’s longstanding dominance in online search.

The new ChatGPT offers real-time web search, providing answers alongside links to relevant sources for up-to-date information on sports scores, news, stock prices, weather, and more.

To ensure accurate and timely information, OpenAI has partnered with various news and data providers.

Additionally, the chatbot now includes enhanced visuals for categories like sports, news, and maps, creating a more interactive and engaging experience.

ChatGPT’s search functionality sources data from third-party providers and select partnerships, ensuring precise and current answers to user queries. OpenAI maintains user privacy by keeping search queries separate from third-party data sources.

Initially, the ChatGPT Search feature is available exclusively to ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers. OpenAI plans to expand access to enterprise and education customers in the coming weeks, with free-trial users expected to receive access across platforms including the ChatGPT website, mobile, and desktop applications in the next few months.

This enhanced ChatGPT feature could change the way users interact with AI, providing them with a convenient alternative for web search and raising the stakes in the competition for online information dominance.
