In a groundbreaking move to enhance its last-mile delivery capabilities, Amazon India has announced the launch of its innovative floating store on the picturesque Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir. This unique initiative is part of the company’s “I Have Space” program, aimed at improving delivery services and empowering local businesses across India.

The floating store, situated on the enchanting Dal Lake, will be operated by Murtaza Khan Kashi, owner of the renowned houseboat “Selec Town.” Murtaza, who has been in the houseboat business for several years, expressed excitement about the opportunity to expand his income avenues through this partnership with Amazon.

“While I have a houseboat as my primary business, it only brings in seasonal income with the inflow of tourists in Srinagar. However, the cost of managing the houseboat is very high, which has made it very difficult for our family. In order to address the increasing expenses, I began looking for additional income opportunities,” shared Murtaza Khan Kashi.

With the floating store, Murtaza will deliver Amazon packages daily, bringing the convenience of doorstep deliveries to residents and businesses situated on both Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake. Previously, customers in this picturesque region had to rely on shikaras to reach the shore or depend on local businesses to collect their Amazon orders. The introduction of the floating store is set to revolutionize the shopping experience of locals and tourists alike.

Karuna Shankar Pande, Director of Amazon Logistics in India, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s potential impact. “This initiative will provide faster and more reliable deliveries to customers across Srinagar while creating new opportunities for small businesses. Additionally, it strengthens Amazon’s delivery network, allowing us to serve our customers better,” said Pande.

The ‘I Have Space’ program, launched in 2015, has already made a significant impact across India. With a network of over 28,000 neighborhood and kirana partners in approximately 420 towns and cities, the program enables Amazon to collaborate with local stores and small businesses for efficient product deliveries within a 2 to 4 kilometers radius.

The introduction of the floating store on Dal Lake adds a unique dimension to the program, capitalizing on the picturesque landscape of Srinagar while extending economic benefits to local entrepreneurs like Murtaza Khan Kashi.
